Michael A. Savin, MD

Assistant Professor, Division of Hematology & Medical Oncology, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, Oregon
Dr. Savin has worked in a variety of academic and private practice settings treating patients with blood disorders and with a variety of cancers. While he continue to treat patients with many kinds of cancer, a major part of my practice has been in the care of people with breast cancer. Dr. Savin has also been active in clinical research for many years, and has worked in the design of clinical trials and management of a large clinical research program in a private practice setting. He developed a breast cancer chemotherapy regimen and helped design the clinical trials leading to its acceptance as one of the standard treatments to help prevent recurrence of the disease. His greatest satisfaction comes from learning to know my patients and their families as real people. There is a very special and unique bond which develops between physician and patient when dealing with potentially very serious illnesses. Dr. Savin can’t imagine another profession which would let me know and care for people of such diverse backgrounds so well.

As Clinical Medical Director for the CMS-OCM pilot and for the Via Oncology Pathways Program at the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU, Dr. Savin is working to ensure the highest quality of Hematology/Oncology care throughout the institution. His responsibilities include helping to guide the CMS-OCM pilot model here, helping to establish and rollout thoroughly vetted pathways through Via Oncology, working to establish survivorship programs, and working closely with clinicians and administration to help develop quality of care metrics. Dr. Savin is  working on breast cancer quality of care on a national scale as Co-Chairman of the breast cancer pathways committee for Via Oncology and as a member of the ASCO Clinical Practice Committee.
